Happy to announce the first project. Simple beginnings. The barebones inspiration is obvious. But it came out of a conversation I had with a friend a few weeks ago.
The simple question was, how long would it take you (meaning: me) to clone a game from the first era of gaming (i.e. the late 1970s and early 1980s). I sat on my hands for a few days and finally, having never done this before (despite the year of courses) decided to give it a go.
So here’s the project spec.
The game area should fit a Super Nintendo, Famicom, Nintendo play area. This, according to wikipedia, is 256 x 224 (link).
I’m going for, naturally, “Pixel Art” so I’ll avoid alpha channels where I can and smooth lines using dithering and limiting my color palette.
Finally, while the initial version will try to replicate the inspirations gameplay. The final “product” should include new features and gameplay. I’m kind of excited about this and have a few ideas.

The project started in GIMP, I blocked out this scene with squares and (really, truly) awful colors. Then I started creating the assets. Work has been completed for: City, City Destroyed, Defense Warhead, Hostile Warhead, Cloud, Launcher, Sky, Ground. All that’s really outstanding is the explosion animation. I found “inspiration” for that on YouTube. And now, I’m sad. That will be tomorrow’s project.
In the spirit of Deving, I’m trying to spend as little time on these initial things as possible (while also making them visually pleasing to myself). I’m quite happy with how a few of these things turned out. The city and launcher, specifically. I may make a one or two more versions of the cloud.
As for sounds and music. Haven’t even thought about it yet…
